Prishtina Used To Have Two Rivers

by Attila Beksac

Prishtina seems too hasty these days. The city,  which is the youngest capital of both Balkans and Europe has lots of problems to solve while ‘turbo-urbanism’ has taken effect in whole its distritcs .

It can be said, this experience that Prishtina has been tasting since the end of Kosovo War is familiar and has taken its roots from the ex-memories of territory’s rich historical cities. ‘Identity crisis’ seems obviously  the most suitable topic to call this developments.

Besa Group HQ by archlab

Besa Group HQ and apartments tower, designed by the young local architects of archlab, is an under construction project  planned to be finished with the end of this year.

Situated in Prishtina, in Kalabria district, this ten storey (G+9) building is a mixed-use building which will house Besa Group HQ offices and residential apartments on the above floors. The area where the building is situated borders Dardania, a highly inhabited district in Prishtina, where the tangent street to the block “Lidhja e Pejës” plays a strategic importance by connecting two different areas of the city. On the other hand, the block targeted by the project is dense, comprising mostly of residential buildings and apartments which have been built recently.

An EU home for Kosovars

Most of us might of noticed the cartoon-colored sidewalk concrete protectors on the narrow street by the Swiss Diamond Hotel, or the colored sidewalk across from the Prishtina`s newly built Cathedral, and wondered whether this street art was vandalism or legal art pieces. Fortunately, these art pieces were the winners of an EU-funded project called Culture for All. Managed by the European Union Office in Kosovo and implemented by ARS PROGETTI SpA (Italy) in July 2012, this competition called young artists and artists’ groups from all over Kosovo to participate in a visual arts prize competition for street artmural paintings, applied arts, photography and/or installations in urban space. On September of 2012 the jury declared the winner artists, among which was Senat Haliti, an architect from the old city of Prizren who authored the “EU Pavilion”.

Prishtina Architecture Week: Day 6

After a numerous events in Prishtina Archtitecture Week which included many interesting lectures, screenings and exhibitions, this year’s edition of Prishtina Architecture Week ended with different exhibitions and an architectural tour in Prishtina. This time, the open studio was held in Përparim Rama’s 4M office in Prishtina.

The voice of majority!

Yesterday, July 4th, the Architects Association of Kosova held an emergency meeting at the amphitheater of the Ministry of Environment and Spatial Planning of Kosova. This meeting was called in Prishtina upon the disapointment that a large number of architects, engineers and planners had on the 2011-2014 leadership of this association. According to them, besides the fact that this association has collected membership money each and every year, there hasnt been one single activity organized by them since late 2011, not even membership confirmations via emial or mail (association’s website confirms these allegations).

Prishtina Architecture Week: Day 4

On its fourth day, the Prishtina Architecture week stayed true to the planned schedule, starting with workshops, exhibits, open studios, and closing the day with lectures and screenings.

The Prishtina based architecture company ArchiEdu presented Graphisoft ArchiCad 17 to the audience, showing the program’s new platform and advanced features which make it a more reliable tool for architects to use.

Prishtina Architecture Week: Day 2

The Prishtina Architecture Week moved into its second and busiest day yet.

It started off with exhibits, student reviews, open studio in the morning and afternoon and concluded with lectures and screening late this evening at Modelarium – FCAE Department of Architecture. The “prime time” of today`s events started with the lecture of Bujar Nrecaj from bnarchitects on his firm`s past and present projects.

CMPR: Maden Group & Co

The organizer of the Central Mosque of Prishtina competition, the Islamic Community of the Republic of Kosovo, announced that 136 freelance and companies were registered for the competition, from which 81 submitted their projects on time. Out of those who submitted, surprisingly, only a quarter were local studios. Prishtina-based architecture practice Maden Group, in collaboration with Rron Tresi arch. and Marsida Musta arch., were among the few local practices and who`s design was praised by many as “fusion of modern Islamic and European architecture in the modern-day Europe.” Featured below is the studio`s exclusive proposal for the competition.

Peja Bazaar: A Winning Collaboration

Finalizing the series of winners of the competition on revisioning the Peja city centre, the winning proposal from architects Fatlum Radoniqi, Arben Verzivolli and Kastriot Jaka was highly regarded for the “simplicity and neutrality” of their approach. Among 14 proposals that were submitted, this winning collaboration struck the jury with a design that was “as much pragmatic as it was poetic and artistic”-city officials have cited. Below find the exclusive images and description as submitted by the architects.

Locus: Proposal by Maden Group

On the recent publication from the Department of Urbanism and Environmental Protection of the Municipality of Peja on the winners of the competition Peja City Center, Maden Creative Studio held the third place. This studio`s design approach named Locus, or the center of activities or power, not only merges the architecture with the overwhelming natural beauties the city of Peja hosts, but also redefines this part of the city as the center of all future activities. Below you may find the studio`s design description and exclusive presentation renderings.

Peja: A city seeking European trends

A city of 96,000, home of the White Drin River and the picturesque Rugova Canyon, Peja is undergoing vast urban developments. Recently, the Department of Urbanism and Environmental Protection of the Municipality of Peja held a competition on revisioning the center of the city, as per the Urban Regulatory Plan “Centre, Kapeshnica and Karagaqi”.

Swiss Diamond Hotel

by Boriana KLLOGJERI

It has been a month since I visit Prishtina for my first time. I spend there only one day but I really liked the city. Every single time I was comparing it with Tirana and the greatest advantage of Prishtina is the “quality”. It is clear that Prishtina`s “outfit” is the industrial one, but if you look carefully on the city`s streets you can find some real architectural “gems” like coffee shops, restaurants and hotels.

Lectures: the art of extra credit

1

Scholars are not only defined by acquiring academic knowledge, rather by sharing the social responsibility that derives from that knowledge, for they need to be as much active inside their academic curriculum as outside of it. As today`s trends have shifted from emphasizing “star architects” to raising consciousness on the social responsibility of their architecture, students as future urban shapers need to welcome the idea of participating on public discourses and debates even if there is no extra credit involved. Despite the lack of international speakers and substandard education practices in our universities, public lectures and workshops host fairly large amount of audience, an occurrence which is to venerate and gives hope that things are changing for good.

Young architects in Biennale reportage

Insipired by this years biennale`s theme, Common Ground, KOSOVA IN BIENNALE – YOUNG ARCHITECTS held a competition where 16 young architects were chosen to be part of a workshop held in Venice based on the essays they wrote on this topic. This full paid workshop took place between November 16th and November 22nd in both Arsenale and Giardini of La Biennale di Venezia. Coordinated by the Architects Association of Kosova, Ideal Vejsa of MadenGroup and Leart Mullaademi of ONUP, this workshop was followed with lectures from Ayhan Baymak, architect and professor at University of Prishtina, and Sezgin Boynik, sociolog and art ctitic in Finland.

The Filigree Maker: the Kosovan Pavilion at the 2012 Venice Biennale

Kosovan architecture made its debut at the 13th International Architecture Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia. This landlocked, new European country is now among 55 nations that have presence in the largest and most prestigious architectural event in the world. The country’s pavilion design, The Filigree Maker, of the curator Përparim Rama was chosen by the Kosovo`s Ministry of Culture as an opportunity to promote the heritage and potential of the Republic of Kosovo in architecture.

Donika II Highrise Complex

d2hc_show

The current trend to build tall in Prishtina continues. In Lakrishte, very close to the ENK Complex, another highrise complex has started constructions.  The project called “Donika II” will have a  mixed-use function, like most other projects planned in Lakrishte, in accordance with the regulation plan for the area.
